Katie Whelan Participates in an Installation Workshop, La Matadero, Madrid

Katie explored new techniques and materials in this workshop facilitated by Colectivo Debajo del Sombrero, where artists worked together to create an installation out of masking tape. It started with spontaneous placement of masking tape and evolved as the artists joined in and even featured within in the installation.

Street Art & Mural Painting in La Tabacalero, Madrid

One of the highlights of the Madrid workshops was a trip to La Tabacalero to paint wall murals. On the way, Katie and her fellow artists got a chance to view some exciting street art and took some inspiration for the workshop.

Here is Katie participating in the mural painting with the artists from Debajo Del Sombrero and AIM.

Drawing at Palacio De Cristal

Katie visited the botanical gardens, Palacio de Cristal. Each glass house had a different climate suitable to the plant life. Here we see Katie doing observational studies of the cactus plants.

Creative Journey to Madrid

Katie is travelling to Madrid next week to an arts workshop hosted by Arts Organisation Debajo Del Sombrero as part of a longer term Erasmus + project called Expanding realities which will see exchange or ideas, approaches and collaborations  between GASP Cork, Art in Motion (AIM) Bristol and Debajo del Sombrero Madrid.

The project is coordinated by CIT Crawford College of Art and Design and supported by Leargas.  The workshop in Madrid will be a change to engage with new method and approaches. Some workshop will be focused on visual response to performance art while time will also be spent working on a large piece of work on an outdoor wall.

Public Engagement at the Sirius Centre

Katie takes part in Public Engagement events at the Sirius Arts Centre for Generation.

During the exhibition Generation, a number of opportunities for Public Engagement were organisied. Meet the Artsist Events, Coffee Mornings and Workshops.

Katie Whelan was heavily involved in the public engagement aspect of the exhibitions. Her work inspired the workshop activities and she was present at some the events.

Katie worked as if in studio, set up in front of her work while the public viewed the exhibition.

Here is Katie's work in progress displayed at the workshop event.

Exhibition: Generation at the Sirius Arts Centre

Generation at the Sirius Arts Centre, Cobh, Co. Cork.

(27.03.15-26.04.15)

Generation is a public participation project with GASP (Glasheen Art Studio Program). The project invited people of varying ages to create works on the subject of age; the work of both children and older people are presented together, portraying the curiosity and magic of childhood through to the experience of those in later years. The project provides opportunities for people from different generations to meet, interact and support each other's creative process. Generation is in collaboration with St. Luke's Nursing Home in Cork and Cork Educate Together National School.

Katie Whelan exhibited one of her paintings as part of this exhibition. "Love" is the strongest theme in her paintings and this fit well in the exhibition that strived to tell stories of age, people and emotions.
